Nancy Pelosi Deserves Communion, But Maybe Not Your Respect

The San Francisco Catholic Archbishop condemned Pelosi for her pro-choice stance, while Pelosi campaigned for a pro-life Democrat

The Speaker of the House has been reprimanded for her recent actions related to abortion, but not for the reasons she deserves.

Last Friday, San Francisco’s Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced that Nancy Pelosi may no longer receive the sacrament of Communion because of her position supporting abortion rights.

In a public statement to Pelosi, Cordileone said because she hadn’t repudiated her position on abortion, “I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”

For those unfamiliar, Communion is a central sacrament of Catholicism and is performed near the end of Mass in which bread and wine — administered by priests or bishops — are believed to be transformed into Christ’s flesh and blood. As someone raised Catholic and now in recovery, I can attest to the severity of the ban.
